The Bitcoin scaling narrative achieved a historic technical milestone today as Citrea announced that its public testnet has successfully processed more than 500,000 transactions with recursive validity proofs verified via BitVM on Bitcoin Layer 1.
Historically, Bitcoin's limited scripting language prevented direct verification of complex smart contracts. Citrea bypasses this limitation by generating succinct zero-knowledge execution proofs off-chain and compiling them into fraud-provable BitVM commitment scripts on the Bitcoin base chain. This allows users to retain native Bitcoin security while executing high-speed EVM transactions.
With tier-1 backing from Founders Fund and Galaxy Ventures, the Citrea testnet is experiencing record developer activity across decentralized lending, automated market makers, and NFT bridges ahead of an anticipated mainnet rollout.
